Switched on Schoolhouse Software

Our family has been homeschooling for about  9 years now.  Up until 6th grade we used workbooks, textbooks and other curriculum we could get our hands on at a reasonable price.  Once we reached the 7th grade, however, it became harder to find a curriculum that would meet all of our needs.  With four children to educate picking a curriculum that is cost effective can be a challenge.  We were introduced to Switched on Schoolhouse after several recommendations and deciding that purchasing one curriculum to use with all four children would be worth the money.  We have been using Switched on Schoolhouse (SOS) software for three years now and are very pleased with it!

The program allows the parent lots of control over their students lessons and content.  Also, with the program doing most of the work it offers more freedom for parents to help their other children while giving the children a quality education.

Some things to consider if you decide to use this software:

1) It is highly recommended that you purchase a brand -new copy of SOS, if this is the first time you are using it.  Check out eBay as that is where I got my brand-new copy that was an inventory item that needed to be cleaned out.  You may be able to get a good price on it.

2) If you are given a copy of the software, you MUST purchase a NEW installation disc with a serial number, once the installation and serial key have been used it cannot be transferred to someone else, even if they gave it to you.  Do NOT use a used one as you will not be able to register the software.  The only reason to purchase a used application disc is if yours is scratched and will not run.  You CANNOT purchase a new application disc from AOP if it is older than 2010 as they no longer support these versions.

3) All Switched on Schoolhouse software before 2003 do NOT require an installation disc, however, you may have problems running them on the newer computer systems.  We have a 2003 version which does run on XP.

4) We have been able to run 2004 SOS on Windows Vista and Windows 7 computer systems.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this product if you are looking for computerized schooling for your child/children. It has saved me a lot of time in not having to make up quizzes, tests and worksheets.

  1. I am looking at several used discs on eBay, and do not have installation discs. I see some offered there, but have no idea if they are already used or not. If so, where do I get a new one? I can’t see to locate this on the AO website. Thanks!

  2. I have brought all of mine used and never had a problem installing a used installation disk. What year are you looking for in an installation disk if your still looking? What grade are you looking for as I’m about to post some on eBay? Let me know if your still in need of one.

    1. Would you happen to have 6th or 8th grade? I have purchased a 2001 6th grade set from eBay, but I don’t know if it’s going to work with my computer.

      1. Hi, I am sorry but I do not have any 6th or 8th grade available. 2001 is too old for the Windows platform, the oldest you can use on Windows is 2003. If you have a 2003 version or later you can run on Windows 7 and 8 by purchasing an NEW elective. With the new elective it will keep Internet Explorer running new. I thought that by taking my Windows back to 98 or even 95 that it would run the older version but this was not so since the problem was in Internet Explorer, which is how the questions (test and quizzes) are formatted. If you can pick up a 2003 or later version then purchase a new elective (one that hasn’t been registered before) and the older software will run. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions!

    2. I know I’m replying to a very old post but maybe you can help me. I have a 2015 installation disk from this school year. I am considering purchasing some 2012 curriculum. Will it update to 2015?
      Thanks! Beth

      1. The 2015 installation disc will allow your software to run on Internet Explorer without problems, but it will NOT update your curriculum to the curriculum offered in 2015. Quizzes are ran through Internet Explorer, so if you try to run older software on the new Operating Systems it will give errors. The new disc will allow the older curriculum to run without problems. I hope this helps.

  3. I may have just wasted some money buying an older (2001) version of Switched on Schoolhouse but I wanted to share that my computer (Windows 7) has a feature that allows me to run a program in compatibility mode. It offers me the option to go all the way back to Windows 95. I purchased it in hopes that the feature will allow it to run on my computer. Any experience with this?

  4. I heard that windows 8 needs to be 2013 or 2014. Was told that you can buy an installation disk for $25.00 plus freight. Was told this from their facebook page in a private message.
I’m also looking for a 5th and 9th grade software that will run on Windows 8 or 7.

    1. I am running a 2004 version of SOS on Windows 7. You cannot run anything earlier than 2003 on Windows machines. In order to have everything work correctly it is recommended that you get a new elective or installation disc to run older SOS versions.

  5. Here is my question. if i am getting 2003 or up, can i use any year of installment for it or do i have to use the year i am using

    1. If you are using using a 2003 curriculum your installation needs to be 2003 or later. For example, the best option is to buy an elective which you can then use the installation disc to open your software. If you use the year of your software the Internet Explorer software won’t be updated and then problems arise when entering in answers. I have software from 2004 and 2006 and my electives allowed the software to run correctly. I hope this helps!

      1. Hi, You can purchase an elective curriculum such as Constitution, History, Speech, or any of the other subjects which will come with an installation disc to run. You will need to install this first and then the older software can be installed AFTER that is put in. Do NOT use the 2003 installation disc as this “could” cause issues. The new year will run the older software.

    1. The 2011 will run the 2011 year or older curriculum but it will not run a 2016 curriculum. If you purchase a 2016 or 2017 curriculum or elective it will come with an installation disc which can then run that year and older versions.
